Vonage is not yet out of bussiness, but if things continue the way they've been going, they won't be around too much longer.  
 
The problem with Skype is that they use a proprietary protocol, and the problem with both companies is that their equipment won't interoperate with other companies.  
 
The best thing to do is to get a SIP device that has not been locked by the service provider.  Then, get your service on the open market from companies like SIPPHONE.COM
 
For information on open SIP hardware, visit SIPHARDWARE.COM, or do a "Google" for SIP Hardware.
 
 
As far as WiFI VoiP,  if your using quality hardware and you get a good signal, it shouldn't be a problem.  The biggest challenge you'll have with VoiP is latency, not bandwidth.  Wireless will offer enough bandwidth (if feed by a descent ISP), but depending on signal quality and the quality of the equipment, latency could become an issue.
